How the 2027 ObamaCare calculator works
- We compare your expected 2027 household income with the federal poverty guideline for your household size. Coverage for 2027 uses the 2026 guidelines.
- We look up the share of income the IRS expects you to contribute toward the benchmark Silver plan in 2027, from 2.15% to 10.22% depending on income.
- That share is the most you’d pay each month for the benchmark plan. Your premium tax credit covers the rest of that plan’s price, and you can apply it to any Marketplace plan except a catastrophic plan.
Example: a household of 2 with $40,000 of income is at about 185% of the poverty level. In 2027 they’d be expected to pay 6.03% of their income, about $201 a month, for the benchmark Silver plan. If that plan cost $1,100 a month for their ages (an example, not a quote), their tax credit would be about $899 a month.

Who can get the 2027 savings
- Household income from 100% to 400% of the poverty level.
- No access to affordable job-based coverage. For 2027, a job-based plan counts as affordable if the employee’s share for self-only coverage is 10.22% of household income or less; family members are judged by the cost of family coverage.
- Not eligible for Medicare, Medicaid or CHIP.
- If you’re married, you file your taxes jointly, with limited exceptions.
- An eligible immigration status starting January 1, 2027. See the new rules.
- You file a federal tax return to reconcile the credit.
Estimate your income carefully. The credit is based on what you expect to earn. When you file taxes you reconcile it with your actual income, and starting with the 2026 tax year there is no limit on how much excess credit may have to be repaid. Report income changes during the year.
